Introduction:

Nicodemus represented the best in the nation. He was a teacher (v. 10), a Pharisee, and a member of the Sanhedrin, the Jewish ruling council. The Sanhedrin had 70 members who were responsible for religious decisions and also, under the Romans, for civil rule.

It’s interesting that vs 2 points out that he came to Jesus by night… As a religious leader he could not openly approach Jesus with any semblance of perceived favorabilty; doing so would have jeopardized his position.

(vs. 2) “Rabbi, we know that you are a teacher come from God; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him.”

Jesus completely ignores this pandering approach… as if He needed the approval of their little religious panel anyhow!

(vs. 3) “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless one is born again, he cannot see the kingdom of God.”

What an incredibly bold and audacious thing to say to a respected religious leader!!!
Listen, it doesn’t matter if you’re a preacher, been to semimary, teach sunday school, lead a small group, sing on a praise team, and show up for church every Sunday… If you have never been born again you will never see the kingdom of God!

Jesus doubled-down - (vs. 7) “Do not marvel that I said to YOU, *YOU* must be born again.”

What does this mean? Born again? The very notion of such a statement confounded the scrupulous mind of this man (Nicodemus) who was a highly educated leader in religious teachings, customs, and traditions… (vs. 4)

What Jesus is speaking of here is the Biblical concept of regeneration… the word itself is only found twice in the Bible, but the axiom upon which this word is founded is the very essence of John 3:16

John 3:16 (NKJV) “For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life.
“Jesus did not come into the world to make bad men good. He came into the world to make dead men live!” — Leonard Ravenhill

Behavioral disciplines, processes, and programs can modify a person’s behavior, but only Jesus can give you an entirely new nature!

Titus 3:3-5 (NKJV) 3 For we ourselves were also once foolish, disobedient, deceived, serving various lusts and pleasures, living in malice and envy, hateful and hating one another. 4 But when the kindness and the love of God our Savior toward man appeared, 5 not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us, through the washing of regeneration and renewing of the Holy Spirit,

The Nature of Spiritual Birth (vs. 5-6)

Spiritual Awakening (vs. 8-16)
Spiritual Appetite (vs. 17-21)
1 Peter 2:2 (NKJV) “as newborn babes, desire the pure milk of the word, that you may grow thereby”
Spiritual Affirmation (vs. 22-28)
John‘s statement was essentially this: I know WHO I am and I know WHO’S I am… (vs. 36)
